How many different news publications are there in the US? The world?
Q. I don't mean news agencies, I mean publications such as USA Today, NY Times, etc. As in, if I wanted to read all the different news publications available in the USA, how many choices would I have? The first to give me this number and include an real estimate for world publications gets the best answer vote! Thanks folks!

A. . That's not a good Q. Half of the major newspapers, and the TV stations, are owned by 3 or 4 organizations. In other words, if you read one, you've read 'em all. They publish only the news THEY want you to see or hear about. So they are NOT 'different'. And are you talking about only English language publications? ...and on and on >>> Four of the large chains stand out due to their size: Gannett, The Tribune Company, The New York Times Company and Knight Ridder. The onlineNews site below brags about having "1,000's of newspapers". Just the New York link lists 220 newspapers! As for the World, I'd guess 6,932. ok? "... Under what heading would I include fiction publications in a CV?
Q. I am applying for a high school teaching position and they want a CV. I do not have any academic publications, but do have 2 short story publications that I would like to list. Under what heading would I include those?

A. Since they are your only publications to date, I would think they would be in the heading of "Significant Publications." I do not know for sure. This is just a guess. I hope it's a good one and I hope you get the job.

Is it against the law to put religious publications in a public place?
Q. In certain minority communities (New York, in particular), we sometimes see some religious groups put their monthly publications (in their own languages, of course) in grocery stores, restaurants, etc. Can anyone tell me if this is against the law in the U.S.? The more specific the answer, the better (i.e. reference to the law itself). Thanks.

A. Grocery stores and restaurants are not public places. The land is controlled by a private owner. A private owner can do whatever he wants with his land. If he wants to line the walls with pornography or literature with sentiment wishing for the violent abolishing of the US government, it would be perfectly legal. Also, in public places, the constitution guarantees those freedoms. Who taught you about US government? Anyone with an elementary knowledge of the Bill of Rights would know better.
