What is the difference between the old active duty ch 30 and new 9/11 gibill?
Q. I am using the old active duty ch 30 gibill and thinking of switching to the 9/11 one. If I am only less than part time in college or taking 3 credits, do I still get the full BAH of less? How is the new gibill better than the old, etc?

What is the full range of the the phrase active duty?
Q. Working on base? Being deployed? What is an air force active duty enlistant to expect? day to day, week to week, month to month? As an active duty enlistant am I awaiting deployment? Can I go to school during this time?

A. Active Duty means full time military member. You will be trained and have a daily job. There is always the chance of being deployed. Trying to balance school with military duties can be achieved, but make sure of your status before paying for classes you may not be able to attend. Some jobs have 12 hour shifts, so going to school would be problematic. Once you sign the military contract, you belong to the military full time.

How can an active duty Marine renew his North Carolina expired drivers license in Pennsylvania?
Q. I'm in the U.S. Marine Corps (active duty) and I have been stationed overseas for four and a half years. My North Carolina drivers license expired in Jan 2008. I am back in the U.S. but my family moved to Pennsylvania and I no longer have a residence in North Carolina. I'm currently in Pennsylvania until Feb 9th at which time I am returning overseas.

A. I am from Tennessee and was able to do it online. Check your state's DMV site. My state allowed me to have a Code 30 which allows my license to never expire as long as I am Active Duty.

What exactly is the difference between the Army Active duty and Army Reserve?
Q. I know what the National Guard is... But I need to know more about the reserve as compared to Active duty. The Reserve is basically part-time Army...am I correct? If i were to go active would i still be able to go to college part time or no? I am still not sure if I should go to school during or after the army. I want to make sure I make the right choice. Would you recommend Active duty over Reserves? Are Active Duty soldiers more likely to get deployed...just curious? Advice? Opinions?
Asked by Lisa - Wed Oct 13 22:55:09 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Since you're already an expert on the National Guard (which is the Army's primary Reserve force) a contrast with that might be the easiest to understand. The Army Reserve is like the Guard except 1. Does not have combat arms units, 2. Does not have the additional state mission the Guard does and 3. It does not have additional state benefits that many Guardsman qualify for (like 100% tuition assistance to compliment the Federal $4500 tuition cap that applies to the Reserves). If you go active you will have trouble taking more than 1-2 classes a semester. Unless those classes are online you may not even be able to complete that. If you enlist in the Reserves, you will have a much easier time pursuing your education on a full time basis. … [cont.]

Q. I am trying to talk to an AMEDD recruiter, but in the "locate a recruiter" option the first thing it asks is if I want active duty or reserves. I really don't know the difference...

A. Do you want a full time job as a Soldier or part time? That's the main difference. Active is 24/7, reserve are 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year, unless deployed( after initial training).

A. It's a job like any other. Only difference is we HAVE to show up to work. National Guard plays soldier while their real job is out in the Civy world. Active Duty soldiers' job is being a soldier 24/7. And we don't have to live on the base, I own my own home off post

How hard is it to get into the green to gold active duty program?
Q. I'm putting together a packet for the green to gold active duty program. I already have a 4-year bachelor's degree, and some graduate level credit I took while active duty. I want to get a brand new 2-year master's degree through the program. I'm an E4 and I've been active duty for 3 years this August. What are my odds of being accepted into the program?
Asked by Tamara M - Wed Jun 30 14:15:46 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Impossible. It's just a fake program to make it look like the Army promotes enlisted to officer. Just apply for OCS you bum and quit trying to make a career out of going to school. Also E-4 after 3 years with a bachelors degree, I think you should be promoted already unless you are just slacking which will further hurt your chances of getting into the program.

A. Two kids and an active duty spouse you won't be able to join as active duty. If you join the reserves you and your spouse need a family care plan in the event you are both deployed.

I want to know if the Marines have any rulings againt reservist going active if they are on probation. A. I don't know for sure about coming from the reserves, but if you were a new recruit you'd have to finish your term of probation before you went active. Ask your probation officer. He probably knows or wouldn't want you leaving town.

Asked by Gordon - Mon Aug 16 22:52:54 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. varies, but i've yet to see any conditions, even on a PB, that were horrible. you'll have your own bed, you'll have showers, you'll have food, you'll have shelter, and you'll have AC. thats really all you need. at worst its like basic training conditions where its sharing a big room or tent with a bunch of other guys, at best you'll have your own CHU (like a shipping container but with air conditioning, a door, and power) complete with shower and "kitchen" (kitchen as in microwave and fridge).

A. Active Duty is Army 24/7... you live & breath it! Based on your job... will be the differences in what you do in the Army. If you do enlist... I wish you good health & luck!!! Make sure you get into shape before going to Basic. Find out weight requirements and what the times you need to do your physical tests in... and work on getting your strength and endurance up. Go and talk to a live recruiter on the chat on The forums are great also! I, also, am enlisting in 2008. I can't wait! HOOAH!

What is the difference between active duty U.S Army Special Forces and National Guard Special Forces units?
Q. I am interested in becoming a member of the elite green berets. What is the difference between going special forces for active duty and national guard besides the one weekend a month. Since Special Forces guys are highly deployed how is it even national guard?
Asked by Dave T - Mon Nov 10 22:36:06 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Those answers above are wrong. In the guard, there are Special Forces. Heres the link about the two national guard special forces unit. I am not too sure about the one weekend a month thing for National Guard special forces, but national guard special forces go through the exact same training as active special forces. I am sure since they are special forces they do much more than one weekend a month. There are some pilots who do full time duty in the guard too. so it is not impossible. But also since they are special forces, they must be ready to deploy when ever. They are not like convention guard troops, these guys are SF so they are vital to military missions. They go when needed. Link about national guard SF

How to remove mandatory 4 reserve years after serving active duty service?
Q. Hello I would like to know if there is a legitimate way to remove a 4 year reserve contract after serving your 4 years active duty in the service. A contract for 4 years active duty and 4 years reserves. Thanks.
Asked by Will - Tue Dec 2 23:09:13 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. no. all contracts are for EIGHT Years total. if your initial contract spells out 4 years active 4 years Reserve, you have no other choice. if the contract gives you options, then you either Re up for another 4 years, go reserves for 4 years or transfer to IRR for 4 years. at any time during IRR you CAN be called up again.

A. You can be on active duty for well over 20 years. When you first sign on, you can sign on for a 4 or 6 year tour. When that tour ends, you sign on for another. Just just keep signing back on at the end of each tour.

What is the difference between dedicated guard and going active duty for the army ROTC?
Q. I am applying for the army rotc now and am planning to get a 3 year scholarship for dedicated guard, but i wanted to know the pros and cons of either dedicated guard and going active duty before having to choose one?
Asked by James Kim - Tue Jul 21 01:26:52 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Currently, the Dedicated National Guard scholarship is only really given for two years. However, I will still list the details regarding each instead of pros and cons as some people's pro might be another person's con. Guard Scholarship: * MUST to join the Guard for a period of 8 years following your commission. Will be 8 years Reserve if you choose to take the GRFD instead. Same scholarship, just different names. * MUST also do the Simultaneous Membership Program while receiving this scholarship. Allows you to get monthly drill pay as well as some experience with a Guard unit. * You get time in service for your time in the SMP program. While your fellow commissionees will make O-1 with 0 years in, you will get O-1 with 2 years in… [cont.]

Does an Active Duty soldier have to get permission from his commander to get a tattoo?
Q. I heard that an active duty soldier had to clear a new tattoo and/or get permission from their commander before getting a new tattoo. Is that true, or are you free to get tattoos as long as it is in the US Army guidelines? (no extremist tattoos, nothing below the wrist or above the collar, etc.) Thanks
