What important activities that should be available to children within day-care to foster their development?
Q. How would the environment be organized or designed? What feature of the environment would be important for children of different ages? What activities in day-care or pre-school programmes might help to promote the development of children s behaviour and abilities? A. Children are getting more, much more, than they have ever had before, but not so much as we think we are giving them, and perhaps, in view of all that is known, not as much as they need. "Miss Palmer, in Play Life in the First Eight Years, gives several excellent suggestions for sense and movement plays in these years. Such apparatus as the slide, the swing, the balance board, the parallel bars, and the spring board may be placed in the yard, the playground or the basement if light and dry, and will afford unending pleasure and exercise. These pieces of apparatus are especially desirable because the fundamental muscles develop first in speed and accuracy and such play will call upon these muscles chiefly. What are some activities I can do with my BIG dog inside while it is raining outside?
Q. I want some ideas of some fun activities that I can play with my Weimaraner indoors. It is raining outside, and he hates going out in the rain. I want some activities that don't result in wrecking my house, as those Weims have A LOT of energy! Please comment, give me some of your fun activities you play with your dogs inside (big dog or small dog even), and thanks for commenting!

A. Aim at a good brain work out rather than a physical romp, and you'll still have a happy, but tired dog at the end of it. You can buy great wooden toys where you hide food in the maze/cups and the dog has to work out which bit of the puzzle the food is under, or you can use the rainy time to increase your dog's obedience, or repertoire of tricks - how about adding roll over/play dead/bow... or teaching him to fetch a toy by name? Clicker training is useful here. Of course, he'll still need a good run when it stops raining - but you'll both have had fun and he'll have learned some new tricks at the same time.

What activities can i do without riding?
Q. I have a "pony project" who is a super burnt out mare. She can't be ridden but is a showmanship and halter machine. Dont comment on why i am doing this please. I need to bond and play with her so what are some activities and brain stimulating things i can do with her?? In hand trail is a gr8 idea. That may really work. She cant be ridden becase she was a great showhorse she went to world and placed 10 or something but was tourtured to get there. Now she hates being ridden and will literally try to kill you and attak you if you take her in a show ring riding. She is a great horse tho. She has a bunch of pts. in a million diffrent things. Does anyone know any fun tricks I could teach her. Fairly easy plz.

A. Well you could lunge/lead her over ground poles or jumps or lunge her in patterns. If you have a round pen or an indoor arena that's completely closed in you could hide treats and have her find them or stick treats in your back pocket and teach her to follow you (my horses old owners did that..its really cute)...you could put various odd objects in the area/pen (buckets, tarps, tack etc) and hide treats in, on top of, and near them...if she jumps you could free jump her. Those are activities..as far as bonding goes (like those all help but more specific stuff) i would just spend a lot of time with her, dress her up, groom her to perfection, braid her, put glitter on her, play games like find the treat with her...that kinda stuff.. you can… [cont.]

How many organized activities do your children do per season?
Q. I have 2 kids and they usually do 2 activities, each, from Sept to May. This year one of my daughters wants to add an additional activity to her evenings, but I think it may be just *too much* for a 6 year old (she'll be 6 soon). How many do your child do at a time and how well does that work? To answer the question, both of them do dance and cheer. She wants to add guitar lessons. Oh, and dance is 90 minutes per week and cheer is 4 hours (2 hour sessions, twice per week).

A. 3 activities does sound like a lot for a 6 yr old. I like for my children to do 2 activities per year also, one physical (sports) and another like music lessons, painting lessons, chess club ect. so that they're well rounded and they get to meet children with different interests and have a variety of friends. If she can already handle two physical activities then I'm sure she could handle guitar lessons. The thing is, that she has to practice and with the other things going on then she may not have the time outside of her lesson to do that. Remind her that its hard work and she has to practice just like everything else. That takes away from time with friends, ect. If she still wants to go then you could let her try but dont get hard on her… [cont.]

What extracurricular activities should I participate in if I want to get into dental school?
Q. I'm interesting in becoming a dentist when I'm older. So while I'm still in high school, what extracurricular activities (inside and outside of school) should I participate in so I can get a better understanding of what being a dentist is like? How about in university? On another note, since extracurricular activities and the "whole picture" is considered along with the dental school application, I'm wondering how students who aspire to become dentists find time to volunteer, job shadow, etc, while at the same time, excel academically. Thank you!

Q. I have 5 and one on the way and it is very hard to drive back and forth to multiple places, but I do. How many kids do you have and How old are they and what activity are they involved in? Mine: Daughter's - 9, 7, & 4 - is in gymnastics and dance 9 year old also plays soccer 7 year old also plays the piano sons - 3& 2 aren't in any activities yet but I'm planning Piano, Karote, and football. Is this too many? And I am not forcing them to do any of it They love it!

A. If they're happy and also have regular downtime to do what they want/ play with friends/ be outside then they're fine. I'm a big supporter of unstructured time, but anyone who tells you there's some set number of activities that's "too many" doesn't realize how different kids can be. I know what you mean about driving back and forth. I have four and I try to schedule activities together (like simultaneous swim lessons) or on weekends or evenings when my husband is home so that I don't have to drag all the kids along to another kid's activity. My younger kids do 2 activities in the morning when the older ones are at school, and the older ones have a total of 3 activities (totaling 2 hours a week) all split between Thursday… [cont.]

A. No particular activity is better than another. How well you do at whatever it is is what counts. Elite schools are after molding future leaders, so rising to a leadership position like president, Secretary or treasurer will help a lot. Don't do a heap - go for 'quality' instead in the few you do. Thanks Bill

A. There's always the "Scene It" games that you guys can play. Or you can bust out the games that you used to play back in the day like Chutes and Ladders, Clue, Candyland, Trouble, Sorry, etc. You can always order pizza and watch a movie or two. Scavenger hunt is fun. You guys are coming from the beach right? Well, everyone usually brings a bunch of stuff with them. Maybe you and your friend can come up with a list together of some of the typical/not-so-typical things that you would bring with you. They can work in groups or individually. Then have a prize for that group/person at the end of the game.

Q. I need ideas for an activities schedule for my babysitting kids. You know how, Supernanny does the whole scheduling thing. I would like to have a routine for the girls (a 10 month old and a 3 year old), so they spend less time watching tv. I get to their house at 7 am and leave at 5:30 pm. Here's a little schedule we go by in my home. I have a nine month old, and two older boys. After breakfast, maybe going for a nice walk or even to the park. Bring along a healthy snack for the kids, and have fun pushing them on the swing. Maybe a little reading after the park. Kids love to cuddle to a good story. After lunch is probably nap time, maybe even for both of the children. If the older child does not nap, maybe playing board games, or doing some arts and crafts with her. What are some activities for the autistic teenager?
Q. I need some good activities for an autistic teen to do over the summer. Maybe even some o activities or any good sites with ideas? Sites/activities for children are fine as well she is not quite her age. She likes to draw, paint, build, and write. But, she does that stuff so much that she would rather do something else, and instead spends her time on the computer all day.

A. We vary enormously, so there is no general answer. We can be into anything from museums to trampolining. Steam railways to butterfly parks. We can love water or hate it... Start with her interests, and do note that for new activities the more all details are laid out and gone over before hand, the more uncertainly is reduced and anxiety from such with it. We tend to handle change, and anything new, best when it is done from a position of familiarity and security. Not too much new at once. Perhaps even visit a new location before visiting the location *and* doing a new activity. Or plan it using pictures and maps: Google street-view can be very useful.

A. 50 minutes is a short time but you could try 2 or 3 of the following. First, teach the children to respect living creatures by teaching them the four Ls. Look at them, learn about them, let them go (after a short time), then leave them alone. Get the kids to think about what they need to survive and teach that the bugs need the same treatment. Second, give each child a mini bug bottle with a magnifying lens if possible, and let them find and observe a bug. Have them team up with a friend and compare bugs. How are they the same? How are they different? Release bugs back to the same place they found them. Third - Play a fun bug game such as "Let The Bugs Go" (a running game) Materials: 2 colors of plastic cups, a large area to run… [cont.]

What activities/things can i do that would look good on my personal statement?
Q. I've got another 2 and a half years before i go to college or UNI. Academically i am fine but i have very few extra curricula activities. All I can think of putting is that i do tennis, golf, and occasionally, sailing and kayaking. Can you suggest other things to do? Nothing too sporty please. Thanks.

What activities would you like your kids to participate in?
Q. What type of activity would you consider is important to your kids between age 3 to 10? Are you willing to sign them up for group outdoor activities organized by private individual in Singapore, such as treasure hunt, nature walk, etc. Or do you think art & craft is more interesting? How much are you willing to pay for each activity? And how long should the duration be?

A. My 7 year old son was in flag football when he was 5. Tried it out and after the season, decided he didn't like it. Now he is 7 and is in soccer and just LOVES it. My daughter is 4 and she hasn't tried anything yet, but I think she wants to do something in gymnastics. Whatever my kids are willing to try (like sports, dance, music etc.) I will encourage it. If they do not want to, then I will not force it. For my son to play soccer it cost us $45 and that included the uniform we get to keep. That $45 is for the whole soccer season of August thru November.
