The arts are a vast subdivision of culture, composed of many creative endeavors and disciplines. It is a broader term than "art," which as a description of a field usually means only the visual arts. The arts encompasses visual arts, literary arts and the performing arts - music, theatre, dance and film, among others. It's a science and engineering speciality school, which makes it a bit different. It's a lot smaller than the other colleges you mentioned, and that can impact acceptance rates. And when you look at UC Berkeley, etc., make sure you're looking at their admissions rates, SATs and etc. specifically for engineering, math and science, not for the uni as a whole, when you're comparing them with Harvey Mudd. Otherwise, you're not comparing apples to apples. Remember, the SAT scores needed to get into, say, U Illinois Urbana engineering will likely be higher than those to get into UI Urbana art or English - especially the math scores.
