How long does it take for latex balloons to deflate?
Q. I need to blow up 108 balloons with air, not helium, and I need to know when I can blow them up so that they will still be blown up on the day of when i need to use them. Any help is welcome, thanks! So, could I do them a few days before I need them?

If I mail some balloons filled with helium will they deflate before they reach their destination?
Q. I want to mail some balloons filled with helium in a big box. So when the box is opened the balloons come out. Will the balloons deflate before they get there? Only serious answers please. Its for my nephew's b-day.
Asked by Crystol B - Mon Oct 1 11:53:53 2007 - Hobbies & Crafts - 7 Answers - Comments

A. It looks like the ones in the stores stay up for a few days. Check with them as they have ones that are sealed differently than you would and would have different sayings on them. I would say the regular ballons would not have a chance and what would keep the box from floating away which ever way you do it? I am not trying to be funny but you will have to think about putting excess weight in them to keep that from happening.

How many molecules of gas are in these balloons?
Q. C. Two balloons are side by side in a room. One is filled with 2 moles of helium gas and one is filled with 2 moles of oxygen gas. They are the same size. What conditions must exist for this to be so? D. How many molecules of gas are in each balloon? E. Imagine that both of these are tightly sealed. By the next day, the helium- filled balloon has become much smaller than the oxygen-filled balloon. If the temperature and pressure in the room did not change, why did this happen? I think that you are supposed to use kinetic molecular theory to answer this question.
Asked by cetinnovations - Tue Nov 21 23:37:36 2006 - Chemistry - 1 Answers - Comments

A. For C, that would normally be true. For D, the answer is 1.2X10^24 atoms. For E, helium atoms escaped through effusion.

How long is Helium suppose to last in balloons?
Q. I just have these balloons that you get for like baby showers and stuff (the foil-ish type) and they've lasted for about 2 weeks. Is this werid?
Asked by Curious - Sat Mar 19 20:26:00 2011 - Physics - 3 Answers - Comments

A. the helium leaks out of rubber balloons through the minuscule pores in the balloons surface. These are the foil kind so it is a lot less porous than the rubber kind. This isn't weird, its natural. If it is in a completely sealed environment then the balloon will be elevated indefinitely.

How many balloons will fit in a small car?
Q. I'm trying to play a prank on someone and fill their car entirely with balloons. I believe it's an old 2-door camry. How many balloons will fit inside? I have a large car. I'm going to blow them up before hand and then stuff them all in their car. They are 12" balloons, air not helium.
Asked by gym-maddie - Wed Feb 18 20:37:53 2009 - Other - Cars & Transportation - 5 Answers - Comments

A. That would depend on how big the balloons are when inflated. If you got average size balloons and inflated them to roughly a diameter of 10 to 12 inches you might get as many as 50 stuffed in.r

Why do balloons deflate when you add papier mache to it?
Q. Five times now, I have covered an inflated balloon with one layer of papier mache and left it to dry overnight. The following morning the balloons have deflated slightly, and therefore I have to start again. Why does this happen and how do I stop it from happening?
Asked by Chris G - Tue May 20 05:48:42 2008 - Hobbies & Crafts - 2 Answers - Comments

A. I don't know why, perhaps something to do with the paper mache pulling moisture from the balloon in the drying process, and deteriorating it's ability to hold the air. Is the balloon kept in a temperature stable environment, gases will contract as the temperature drops, giving the appearance that the air has left; when actually it is only smaller. Have you tried inflating a balloon letting it sit overnight, to see if it deflates the same amount, using it as a control. If so you might try a better/thicker grade of balloon. You may also try coating the balloons with a sealant, like acrylic, or finger paint, something that is neutral in p H, non-acidic, and non-alkali; to create an impermeable barrier. Or increase the temperature in the room… [cont.]

Why aren't we using weather balloons for transportation?
Q. According to the military, weather balloons, swamp gas, and venus can outperform the most advanced aircrafts in flight manuvering, and are reported by millions of people each year flying overhead. One even crashed in new mexico in 1947. So why don't we use weather balloons to travel since they can rapidly attain speeds in excess of 10,000 mph? Chado it is "common sense." and the question was a pun on investigations such as project blue book.

Hot air balloons. What is the first image or series of images to come to mind when you hear that phrase?
Q. I'm a graphic design student trying to design a new identity for an annual balloon invitational. I need something more to work with, because honestly, hot air balloons do look really cool in and of themselves, so many artists have chosen the easy way out and just stuck together a collage or some similar approach, and there hasn't been much 'branching out' with this particular concept. What do you see when you think about hot air balloons? What do you hear? feel? There's no 'bad' idea. Give me anything you think of!

A. Your not supposed to inflate them. Just tac or tape them to the wall. Inflating them every day would be less stressful and still get the point across.

How to get balloons I orally blow air into to float?
Q. I forgot, when you blow air into a balloon through your mouth will it float up to the ceiling? Or do they just sink to the floor? Or MUST I use helium? If so, where do I get helium to blow up those regular balloons?
Asked by CSenta - Sun Oct 25 22:47:38 2009 - Physics - 1 Answers - Comments

A. No, when you blow air into a balloon it will not float. It will sink to the floor. You MUST use helium. You can purchase a smaller size helium tank at a party supply store.

How many balloons would I need full of helium to get off the ground?
Q. I know it sounds like a dumb question, but how many helium filled balloons would it take to lift a 60 pound child off the ground, or to jump off a roof without hurting himself. We never did anything on helium in science so I don't know much about it. I'm not actually planning on jumping off a roof, curiosity killed the cat, so I'm using the internet instead, cats cant use the internet or curiosity would have lost.
Asked by Ben - Thu Nov 5 09:17:00 2009 - Physics - 3 Answers - Comments

A. You need a volume of helium whose difference in mass relative to the atmosphere is greater than your own mass. Helium has a density of about 0.179g/litre at 0 deg C and standard atmospheric pressure. Normal air density is about 1.292g/litre at 0 deg C and standard atmospheric pressure. The difference is 1.113g/litre. The corresponding mass of 60 pounds at the earths surface in gram is 60*454 g = 27240 g So, to lift the 60lb child, you'd need: Volume of helium = mass of child / massdifference per litre of gas. V = 27240g / (1.113g / 1 litre) = 1 litre * 27240 / 1.113 = 24474 litre of helium. This is about 24.5 cubic metres of gas. The number of balloons depends entirely on how big one balloon is and to jump off a roof without hurting… [cont.]

Asked by KK - Tue Dec 15 15:58:32 2009 - Decorating & Remodeling - 1 Answers - Comments

A. 1. Your phone book. Look up "Party Planning" or "Balloons" or "Decorators" or something like that. 2. The Internet. Type in the appropriate key words, such as "balloon decorators" or "professional balloon decorator" or something like that. Narrow it down by typing in the city you reside in. 3. Word of mouth. Does anyone you associate with know of someone or of a business that does this sort of thing? A professional balloon decorator worth their salt will work with your materials, although it will not be as profitable for them because they are not charging you for the balloons and streamers, etc.

I really wish Yahoo would at least make them so that they only pop up if you sit above the link for a couple of seconds first. There has to be something they can do to make them less irritating. I am actually thinking of switching to MSN for my news and homepages. I am gonna give it another month and see if they have changed anything, then just give up the ghost if they haven't.

How many helium balloons would I need to lift myself of the ground?
Q. How many standard sized helium balloons (like the ones you can buy in a grocery store) would I need to hold to lift myself of the ground. I realize things like body weight, air pressure, altitude and helium pressure in the balloon will make a difference. I'm just trying to get an idea?
Asked by Hoppelemine - Tue Apr 20 09:40:39 2010 - Physics - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Using Archimedes' Principle, you need this much volume of helium V = m / (density_air - density_helium) where m is your mass and the air and helium densities are to be those at room temperature. How many He balloons you need? divide this volume by the volume of a typical He balloon.

How many helium balloons does it take to lift a person?
Q. I'm talking about the ordinary little party sized balloons. How much would that many helium balloons cost to buy? Has anyone actually held on to enough balloons to float away? I hope they had strong arms.
Asked by water_skipper - Mon Jul 17 20:26:31 2006 - Physics - 4 Answers - Comments

A. Let's assume 1 balloon is a sphere 20 cm (8 inches) in diameter. The radius of the balloon is 10 cm, so the volume is 4.2 liters (v = 4/3 * pi * r^3). The ideal gas law states that 1 mole of gas (6.02 x 10^23 molecules) occupies 22.4 liters at standard temperature and pressure. So it takes 5.35 balloons to hold 1 mole of helium. Each molecule of helium displaces 1 molecule of air, which is mostly nitrogen. Helium has a molecular weight of about 4, and nitrogen (N2) has a molecular weight of about 28. Thus each mole of displaced gas gives you a whopping 24 grams of lift, which is less than one ounce! If you weigh 150 pounds, that's 68,000 grams. That would be 68,000 / 24 = 2834 moles of helium 2834 x 5.35 = 15,158 balloons (!!)

A balloon is an inflatable flexible bag filled with a gas, such as helium, hydrogen, nitrous oxide, oxygen, or air. Modern balloons can be made from materials such as rubber, latex, polychloroprene, or a nylon fabric, while some early balloons were made of dried animal bladders. Some balloons are used for decorative purposes, while others are used for practical purposes such as meteorology, medical treatment, military defense, or transportation. A balloon's properties, including its low density and low cost, have led to a wide range of applications.
