How does independent study work, and how do I switch to it?
Q. I am a sophomore in high school, and am seriously considering switching to independent study. I am pretty well organized and very self motivated. I have lots of friends, but I'm not what you would consider a "social butterfly". Do you think that independent study is right for me, and if so, could you point me in the right direction as to how to get started.

A. My daughter did most of her high school on independent study. In her case, she was sick with endometriosis ans could not attend clases regularly. We just talked to the counselor at her high school and asked them and they referred us. because she was too sick to go to regular high school and got little guidance from the schools and had to work at her own pace, she graduated a year early and now at 21 is in grad school already. Also in California they have a secret exam they call the CHSPE. If a student writes that exam and passed, they are a high school graduate almost instantly. See if your state has something similar. My daughter wrote that as well, even through we learned about it too late. So in effect she graduated from both the… [cont.]

How do independent film makers generally find funding?
Q. Do they just go and ask big companies if they want fund the films? What type of company or people do they generally approach to do this kind of thing? Do an independent film-maker and an independent animated film-maker do this kind of thing differently?

A. Some the ways that fund films are we throw parties for another filmmaker to get them started not much money there yet good eats. Even more in the Chicago area there are a few bars that allow the setting up of the funds to go the film thats brought to the bar. Best way is sponsors for films thats kinda how the real films do it latest film we did we set it up with some of the business to film at their sites and they would be in the film. For a few bucks they get a POV Point Of View of their store when the scene starts there. Now to get more we would set the scene to the DVD chapter markers start at the scene of the business. The last part is to show clients that the money that they donate to the film they get top billing for the film when… [cont.]

What is the Independent and dependent variable from this experiment?
Q. "Mrs. Smith's biology class is doing a lab on which trait will be best in winning a thumb wrestling match. It can either be the length of the thumb, the circumference of the wrist or the circumference of the thumb. The students use a rule, string and their thumbs in this experiment. What is the independent variable? What is the Dependent variable?" So can anyone help me? What's the independent variable and what's the dependent? I really don't understand =/ Thanks so much!
Asked by scxxjoker - Thu Sep 24 16:11:57 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, dependent variables rely on independent variables. So, I think the students using their thumbs to measure are the dependent variables, because their measurements would very in each individual. The ruler and string would be the independent variables, because their values do not change. Hope this helps!

As an independent contractor should I start an LLC?
Q. I am starting a career in 100% commissioned sales as an independent contractor paid through a 1099. The business will have general office expenses. Would it be a tax benefit for me to start an LLC and have my checks paid to the LLC.
Asked by Nutsogood - Fri Sep 14 14:41:42 2007 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. From a tax perspective, there is no difference between how a sole proprietorship is taxed and a LLC is taxed. The benefit from an LLC is legal liability protection. Depending on the income, you could form an LLC and elect to be taxed as an S-Corp but there are other issues. You may save a little in taxes but you would have to issue yourself a paycheck, withhold payroll taxes and pay unemployment taxes on yourself. I wouldn't go the S-Corp route right away though. Many people form an S-Corp long before they need to and end up paying thousands of dollars in legal and accounting fees. Walk before you run. See a tax professional in your area and he or she can run some numbers for you.

How were independent record shops in the UK run in the 1960s? How did the booths work for example?
Q. I am doing some research into the running of an independent record shop in the UK in the 1960s. For example, did every shop have a wee listening booth? Who put the record on? How many headsets were there? Generally what were the staff like? Who sold the records to the shop in the first place? Etc
Asked by Ruth - Tue Jun 15 12:11:27 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Oh dear, showing my age now! We had a record shop in our town called 'Huxfords' and it had 3 listening booths. You asked the assistant to put a record on for your booth and you went in and donned the headphones. You could then listen in private. 3 booths meant 3 people could listen to different things all at once (this was obviously different to the previous answerer's experience). The staff were very friendly and very trendy as I remember, dressing in the fashions of the time. I don't know who provided the records to the shops. It was a great experience, and such a shame that the 'listening booth' went out of fashion.

A. The lack of sleep is the independent variable because the are going to have lack of sleep; it doesn t get effected by the other variable. The mental performance is the dependant variable because it is supposed to depend on the lack of sleep in teens. Hope this helps!

If I file independent on my taxes can my parents still provide me with health insurance?
Q. I am filing my 2009 taxes, and I provided all financial support for myself. I am a full-time student however, and I am still on my parents health insurance. Will filing independent affect my eligibility for their health insurance? No, I live on my own but my parents can claim me for their insurance because I'm only 21 and I am a full time student. This is the first year it has been an issue because I used to live on campus and with my parents during breaks.

A. The independent variable is the one that is changing - so in this case, it is the distance from the sun. The dependent variable is the one that DEPENDS on the outcome of the independent variable. So in this case, it is the period of revolution. The period of revolution DEPENDS on how far the distance is from the sun. Hope this helped.

What is the independent and Dependant variable in this example?
Q. I have to tell what the independant and depeandant variable was in this experiment. In brief, it is about three females who dressed preppy, and than dressed in 'messy' clothes. When they were in preppy clothes, they asked for donations, and when they were in the 'messy' clothes, they asked for donations to see if dress had an affect on someone donating. I believe the independent variable is the clothes that they wore (Could be wrong) is the defendant variable the amount of money they collected or the number of people who donated?
Asked by xayanexchanx - Tue Oct 14 22:27:14 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Correct on both counts! The clothes are the IV and The DV could be either -- look more closely at what they measured; did they express it in 'dollars' or 'donators'? --Usually, I don't answer questions that are for someone's class, but I think it's worthwhile to confirm it when you're obviously trying and you're on the right track. Good job!--

Q. I did an experiment on the nitrate levels in three water samples of the local river. I used some tap water also. I need to know: was the dependent variable the quality of the water and the independent variable the levels of nitrates? Or should the tap water be the dependent variable? A. In an experiment we must change only one factor at a time while keeping all other conditions the same. Scientists call the changing factors in an experiment variables. An experiment usually has three kinds of variables: independent, dependent, and controlled. The independent variable is the one that you alter throughout your experiment. The dependent variable is the variable that you measure to see how it responds to the change made to the independent variable. The new value of the dependent variable is caused by and depends on the value of the independent variable. The controlled variables are the ones that you try to keep constant throughout your experiment so that they don't affect your experiment. Most experiments have more than… [cont.]

A. Call your nearest IRS office and request Estimated Tax Forms. They will automatically send you forms for 2007. You still have time to receive them before your next Estimated payment, due this September 15. If not received in a few days, call again. If none are received before Sept. 15 deadline, You can send a check to your IRS located in your state. Be sure to write on the check your Social Security number, and "Estimate 2006". Be sure your current address and phone # is on the check. Your next payment is due by Jan. 15, 2007, for 2006. You should have forms by then. If you owed Estimated tax for previous quarters in 2006 and not paid them, you should calculate those and send 1/2 of the past due amount on Sept. 15, plus the regular… [cont.]

Asked by Diva - Mon Aug 11 12:16:16 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. W-9 for their Social Security Number. If you hire people as independent contractors, you have to treat them as independent contractors. Just calling them independent contractors, even if the worker agrees, is baloney. Using an independent contractor means you can dictate what the end product looks like but not the means to get there. If you treat them like employees--pay a low amount that looks like wages by the hour, provide tools and a place to work, demand their presence at your location, dictate work hours--when one of them gets fired or injured on the job they are going to file an unemployment or workers compensation claim and you are going to have a big tax bill that you thought you could avoid. If you try to cheat the system,… [cont.]

A. Bourgeois Pig 5931 Franklin Ave Los Angeles, CA 90028 Overstuffed velvet couches, pool tables and dark painted walls create this neo-Bohemian hang out. Espressos, lattes and assorted tea drinks dominate the coffee-bar style menu. Local artists display their works on the "gallery" walls, while young writers occupy the tables discussing their newest inspirations. The atmosphere is less trendy and more intellectual. The only downside to this place is finding parking... BTW don't park in the Mayfair market parking they like to hand out parking tickets there.

I'm an independent contractor. How much should I deduct from my wages for taxes (federal, state, etc)?
Q. I'm currently working as an independent contractor in LA. This is a first for me since I've always been an employee in a company. How much should I deduct from my weekly wages to cover for all the appropriate taxes (federal, state, social security, etc)? I don't want to end up paying a bundle at the end of the year. I've also heard something about self-employment taxes. Any advice? Thanks!
Asked by LEKI - Fri Jun 13 01:06:20 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Unless your income comes from the sale or distribution of Fire Arms, Tobacco or Alcohol, you do not need to deduct any taxes as according to the US Law, the tax from any other source is of voluntary compliance. Call your local IRS Office and ask them. They will have no choice but to confirm this law. Record their answer on the dictaphone or a tape recorder for your future reference.
