How does independent study work, and how do I switch to it?
Q. I am a sophomore in high school, and am seriously considering switching to independent study. I am pretty well organized and very self motivated. I have lots of friends, but I'm not what you would consider a "social butterfly". Do you think that independent study is right for me, and if so, could you point me in the right direction as to how to get started.

A. My daughter did most of her high school on independent study. In her case, she was sick with endometriosis ans could not attend clases regularly. We just talked to the counselor at her high school and asked them and they referred us. because she was too sick to go to regular high school and got little guidance from the schools and had to work at her own pace, she graduated a year early and now at 21 is in grad school already. Also in California they have a secret exam they call the CHSPE. If a student writes that exam and passed, they are a high school graduate almost instantly. See if your state has something similar. How do independent film makers generally find funding?
Q. Do they just go and ask big companies if they want fund the films? What type of company or people do they generally approach to do this kind of thing? Do an independent film-maker and an independent animated film-maker do this kind of thing differently?

As an independent contractor should I start an LLC?
Q. I am starting a career in 100% commissioned sales as an independent contractor paid through a 1099. The business will have general office expenses. Would it be a tax benefit for me to start an LLC and have my checks paid to the LLC.

How were independent record shops in the UK run in the 1960s? How did the booths work for example?
Q. I am doing some research into the running of an independent record shop in the UK in the 1960s. For example, did every shop have a wee listening booth? Who put the record on? How many headsets were there? Generally what were the staff like? Who sold the records to the shop in the first place? Etc

A. Oh dear, showing my age now! We had a record shop in our town called 'Huxfords' and it had 3 listening booths. You asked the assistant to put a record on for your booth and you went in and donned the headphones. You could then listen in private. 3 booths meant 3 people could listen to different things all at once (this was obviously different to the previous answerer's experience). The staff were very friendly and very trendy as I remember, dressing in the fashions of the time. I don't know who provided the records to the shops. It was a great experience, and such a shame that the 'listening booth' went out of fashion.

Q. My husband a trucker and considerd and independent contractor. They do NOT take taxes and the like out of his paychecks. How do we go about paying the tax? We were told we needed to file paperwork every 3 months and that we should be holding x amount back, but what paperwork we need to file and how much to hold back is a mystery. Do we have to have an accountant or can we just do this ourselves? ANY information would be helpful. Thanks! We have an accountant now and she is taking care of that aspect AND our household bills-the problem is our morgtage is repetedly late and there have been a few times the utilities have been turned off on us. Just calling them independent contractors, even if the worker agrees, is baloney. Using an independent contractor means you can dictate what the end product looks like but not the means to get there. A. W-9 for their Social Security Number. If you hire people as independent contractors, you have to treat them as independent contractors. Just calling them independent contractors, even if the worker agrees, is baloney. Using an independent contractor means you can dictate what the end product looks like but not the means to get there. A. Bourgeois Pig 5931 Franklin Ave Los Angeles, CA 90028 Overstuffed velvet couches, pool tables and dark painted walls create this neo-Bohemian hang out. Espressos, lattes and assorted tea drinks dominate the coffee-bar style menu. Local artists display their works on the "gallery" walls, while young writers occupy the tables discussing their newest inspirations. The atmosphere is less trendy and more intellectual. The only downside to this place is finding parking... BTW don't park in the Mayfair market parking they like to hand out parking tickets there.

I'm an independent contractor. How much should I deduct from my wages for taxes (federal, state, etc)?
Q. I'm currently working as an independent contractor in LA. This is a first for me since I've always been an employee in a company. How much should I deduct from my weekly wages to cover for all the appropriate taxes (federal, state, social security, etc)? I don't want to end up paying a bundle at the end of the year. I've also heard something about self-employment taxes. Any advice? Thanks!

Unless your income comes from the sale or distribution of Fire Arms, Tobacco or Alcohol, you do not need to deduct any taxes as according to the US Law, the tax from any other source is of voluntary compliance. Call your local IRS Office and ask them. They will have no choice but to confirm this law. Record their answer on the dictaphone or a tape recorder for your future reference.
