What is the Independent and dependent variable from this experiment?
Q. "Mrs. Smith's biology class is doing a lab on which trait will be best in winning a thumb wrestling match. It can either be the length of the thumb, the circumference of the wrist or the circumference of the thumb. The students use a rule, string and their thumbs in this experiment. What is the independent variable? What is the Dependent variable?" So can anyone help me? What's the independent variable and what's the dependent? I really don't understand =/ Thanks so much!

A. Well, dependent variables rely on independent variables. So, I think the students using their thumbs to measure are the dependent variables, because their measurements would very in each individual. The ruler and string would be the independent variables, because their values do not change. Hope this helps!

How do you become a independent contract employee?
Q. Currently I am working as a design engineer for a medium sized company. I am looking to go independent and charge the company a simple flat hourly rate. I feel that I would be entitled to ask for more money than I currently get paid considering the fact that I would no longer be under their health and unemployment insurance. I'm wondering what are the steps I need to be looking at in order to do this, and what are some convincing arguments for my case that I can present to my company.

A. Hello there, Either I am confused about this or you are. There is not such thing as an "independent contract employee." You are either independent or you are an employee. You cannot be both. If you are an employee, you simply cannot decide to change the name of your status. If the underlying relationship is not changed, no matter what you call it and no matter what documents you write, you will be held to still be an employee. In short, an employee has not profit motive. They must work according to the employers rules. In contrast, an independent contractor has a profit motive. He may or may not make a profit on any particular job, but the notion of a profit must be present. An independent contractor is not subject to the rules of an… [cont.]

What is the independent variable and control group?
Q. In lab we experimented on pill bugs. A chamber was created by connecting two petri dishes allowing the pill bugs to move from each dish. The hypothesis was that the number of pill bugs in an area is dependent on wetness- the more wet the dish the more pill bugs. Therefore one dish was wet and one dry. Five bugs were initially placed in each dish. What is the independent variable and the control group of the experiment. I thought the wetness would be the independent variable and the 5 pill bugs in that started in the dry dish to be the control group. However the teacher marked these answers as wrong. Does anyone know the right answer?
Asked by Victor - Thu Sep 17 16:10:05 2009 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. The wetness of the dish is the independent variable. The independent variable is the one that you change on purpose. Your teacher is WRONG on that one. As for the control group, in my opinion you didn't have one. A control group for this experiment would have been 10 pill bugs 5 in each two dry interconnected petri dishes. The experiment is poorly designed without this control and without doing several repetitions. If I really wanted to study this I would start out with at least 10 pairs of chambers.10 that were both dry, and 10 that were one wet and one dry. That being said, if I had to call one of the groups a control group I would say it was the group that was already in the wet petri dish. We expect them to stay put and the… [cont.]

Q. How does a person become an independent travel agent? I am looking for the following information: General cost of courses Length of courses The amount of money (generally) a travel agent makes yearly Is there a high and low season for travel agents? When you are independent, do you work through an established agency for a fee? Last but not least, if you have any websites that go into good detail, that would be helpful. A. All you have to do is go to your college. You can get either a diploma or a degree, but a degree will better help you to achieve this. I am a travel agent and I graduated in December with my degree. It takes about 2 years, depending on how much time you put into it and how many classes you take. If you want to, you can try to do it between 6 months and a year if you can, but it will be very hard. It will cost you about $10,000 for everything, tuition, books, classes everything. Apply for scholarships, especially if you had great grades in high school. I kept a 4.0 GPA throughout my academic history, and scholarships and grants got me through college and whatever was left over was like a gift, to do as you wish with. I must have… [cont.]

A. It's pointless to have a third-party president until that party has some representation in Congress. But it's not impossible for a third party to get there. I mean, 160 years ago the Republicans were a third party.

A. W-9 for their Social Security Number. If you hire people as independent contractors, you have to treat them as independent contractors. Just calling them independent contractors, even if the worker agrees, is baloney. Using an independent contractor means you can dictate what the end product looks like but not the means to get there. If you treat them like employees--pay a low amount that looks like wages by the hour, provide tools and a place to work, demand their presence at your location, dictate work hours--when one of them gets fired or injured on the job they are going to file an unemployment or workers compensation claim and you are going to have a big tax bill that you thought you could avoid. If you try to cheat the system,… [cont.]

Can you buy a Mercedes from an independent dealer, or do you need to buy from a licensed MB dealer?
Q. I am looking at purchasing a preowned Mercedes S430 and there is inventory at both licensed dealers, as well as at independent dealers throughout the Los Angeles area. Ultimately I would prefer to go through a licensed dealer, but the deals are much better with an independent. Is there much more risk associated with an independent? If I have a mechanic evaluate the car from an independent dealer, am I buying with confidence, or with my fingers crossed? What should I look for in an independent if I go there? Or, what do I get by going with a licensed MB dealer? Many Thanks!
Asked by Vinerider - Mon Nov 27 15:08:21 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. All dealers must be licensed to sell to the general public. Buying a Benz from a non-MB dealer can be a good deal, HOWEVER you should take it to an MB dealer and have them inspect the car. They can pull the maintenance history, verify that any recalls have been completed and check for any outstanding technical service bulletins. They will also inspect the vehicle and let you know what condition it is in. Don't forget to pull a Car Fax report as well.

A. we could save our billions of aid dollars if their governments wasn't so corrupt. then we would not have to worry about feeding their poor starving children that they reproduce so numerously and cannot or will not care for them. also, if they would end slavery and free their innocents and recognize women's rights and quit making them breeding animals with no say over anything. then they and the whole world would benefit. they could share in their own wealth.

Can you claim yourself as an independent if you are still under your parents' health insurance?
Q. I am a full-time student, and did not live with my parents all year. Yet I am still under their health insurance until I turn 23 this year. I have had a job all year. Can my mom legally claim me as a dependent? Would I still be able to claim myself as an independent?

A. One generally can take an exemption for any dependant if you provide more than 50% of their support. If in doubt, the IRS has a formula to figure. You have to provide the potential dependant's social security number and, of course theirs on your Return. I say the IRS has a formula because, if there is a dispute and both parties made 3400.00 or over, the other party could claim the exemption if the IRS ruled in their favor. You may be eligible for the earned income credit also if you worked. If you are supporting yourself, it means you provide over 50% of their living expenses. For your parents to claim you, they must pay more than half of the cost of keeping up a home for the year. You can determine whether you or they paid more than… [cont.]
