Can a teacher post student names on an Excel spread sheet that students access via link from the school websit?
Q. The students are working in groups. The groups are on a spread sheet. Can the list be made available via the school website? They would have to click on a link to open Excel. Is this legal?

A. Students' privacy and anonimity have become essential to their safety and well-being in these difficult times. The names of pupils attending a certain school should not be disclosed directly or indirectly outside the school environment and particularly on the internet. Once the name of a pupil has been provided in connection with a specific school on an official website that is open to all, he or she is easily trackable and anyone with ill intent knows where to get hold of this particular student and harass him/her; it might give information to a paedophile or, in the case of parental separations, the ability to get hold of the child despite a court order forbiding access. How can we get students to want to learn instead of them doing the work for the grade?
Q. It is absolutly ridicolous that students do not go to school to learn anymore, they do all the work just to get a good grade. How can this be changed. Students are too concerned about doing well in school then learning.

A. What a great question!! I can't say that I know the solution to the problem, but I think that a big problem, at least in my state, is that more and more is expected of students. They are rushed through new lessons at such a quick rate that they don't have the time get any enjoyment out of it. It starts at such a young age that it develops a pattern at an early stage in education. This seems to be very evident in math. My elementary aged kids bring home work covering multiplication one day, fractions the next and maybe money related story problems the next. This is not something that the teachers are deciding on their own, but rather the curriculum the school has adopted. They are unable to achieve mastry on one lesson before moving… [cont.]

What are ways college students can eat healthy when they are on a budget?
Q. For many college students like myself, eatting healthy is not always possible and many college students are on a shoe string budget for groceries and many students end up eatting food they do not like. This food can include Ramen Noodles, Canned Food, Frozen Food, and eatting fast food such as pizza and hamburgers. What kind of advice would you give to college students to eat healthy when they are on a budget for food and groceries?

A. fruits and veggies are a lot cheaper than eating out. try spicing up your noodles with small peices of meat and veggies, kinda like a little stir fry. it's healthier and yummier. Also, milk, eggs, and flour can make thousands of different foods. For example, Swedish Pancakes. Add a little cinnamin and jam or fruit, they're delicious and healthy! I eat those for dinner sometimes. You can get billions of recipes online that only require those three ingredients, plus whatever you want to add to it. It's simple to eat healthy on a tight budget. It's also cheaper to eat healthier!

How should university students do to choose their subjects?
Q. Some ones think university students should only study one specialist subject. Others think the universities should encourage the students to learn a range of subjects in addition to a specialist area. Give your opinion?

A. In my first year I was allowed to pick from a range of subjects (I could pick 4 in total from about 12). In my second and third years it was more specialised. That is the best way, imo.

What is the percentage of male and female students in an art class?
Q. In an art class at a local high school, there are 11 male students, and 9 female students. What is the percentage of male students in the art class? What is the percentage of female students in the art class?
Asked by Will Turner - Wed Apr 9 13:56:55 2008 - - 2 Answers - Comments
A. The Total number of students in the class is 20. There are 11 males, therefore 11/20 is the percentage. 11/20 = 0.55 = 55% Hence, 55% of the students in the art class are male. There are 9 females, therefore 9/20 is the percentage. 9/20 = 0.45 = 45% Hence, 45% of the students in the art class are female.

What is the largest number of students who must necessarily share a locker?
Q. there are 805 lockers in the athletic center and 4026 students who need to share lockers. Therefore, some students must share lockers. What is the largest number of students who must necessarily share a locker?
Asked by John Smith - Tue Dec 14 14:55:47 2010 - - 1 Answers - Comments
A. Divide and round up to nearest whole. This is an oversimplification of the pigeonhole principle. In this case you have 4026/805 = approximately 5.001, but if you take that 5 and multiply by the lockers, you get 4025, so the last person has to go into any one of those groups of 5, and thus the largest necessary group is 6. If on the other hand, you are asking how many students MUST share lockers, then you can have 804 students get their own locker, and all the rest share the last one. This means the maximum number of necessary shares for one locker must be 4026-804 = 3222. If that number were any higher, it would imply that someone left a locker unused, and that is not allowed in this kind of problem.

What is the difference between student/faculty ratio and average number of students per class?
Q. I was looking at college, (I'm a sophomore in high school) and I was looking at some prospective college facts. I saw that in one college, there was a 15/1 student/faculty ratio, but there were an average of 29 students per class. What causes this difference?

A. Departments get to count faculty (total teachers) that sometimes don't actually teach any classes. Some of these are doing research and some are simply advising students but have no course load. By counting these with the faculty that are teaching classes, we can imply that we have smaller classes by saying we have a student:faculty ratio of 15:1 when the average class size might really be 30 students (30:1) because all of our teachers aren't teaching a class. Let's say we have two biology teachers and 60 biology students. Our student:faculty ratio is 60:2 or 30:1 and their average class size will be the same 30 if they're both teaching the same number of students. But, if one of those faculty is in research and doesn't have any… [cont.]

A. strength in numbers, always go somewhere in groups. At my college they have a program where if it's late at night and you don't feel comfortable you can call Public Safety and an officer will come and walk you to where ever it is your going (your car or dorm if you had a late night class). When you look around at colleges see if there's a similar program. Be appreciative of your overprotective guy friends...they'll come in handy.

High School Students: Would you work harder to get good grades if there was a cash incentive?

I actually read a story once about someone who got Cs on purpose so their parents would give them cash incentives, then when they got their A easily, they get the money. It depends on the current grade of the student, and his/her mentality about school and grades. I think other rewards would work better than money. My school takes a photo of all the 4.0 students every semester and posts it someone on the website. It's kinda lame and no one really cares about it but the parents, but it's an idea. Try this, this might work better - everyone who gets a 3.0 or above gets some kind of reward - maybe a free something (not something lame like a pencil)-… [cont.]

A. Because subconsciously you feel that you are superior than all of them, and so it makes you laugh when you help them. You feel as if they are your slaves and that you are their almighty king. I hope this answer didn't made you laugh ... because if you did then something is wrong with you ...

A. know of a company that gives personal canadian loans. You can use the money for any purpose and they don't have upfront fees. They work with most credit issues but you need verifiable employment. contact: for details.

How many foreign exchange students are allowed to line in one house and are they allowed to babysit your kids?
Q. I need to know this because my husbands ex-wife threw my stepson out to accomodate her 4 foreign exchange students. Are there any rules regarding the host responsibilities and is she allowed to use these students for babysitting services?

A. OK .. this is a very loaded question. First, is she a representative for the organization and is she listed as the permanent family or just an arrival family? If she is a representative, chances are good she got paid to bring these kids in (very few are volunteer only), However, it is quite common for a representative to have several students at the beginning of the year as often times permanent host families might be on vacation or unable to take their student on the day he/she arrives. If it is an arrival (temporary) situation then she could have that many. But if it's a permanent placement then the parents of both students must agree to it in writing as well as the USIA. This is according to the USIA 514.25 "(l) Host family… [cont.]
