How much is the basic pay for graduate teachers in your country?
Q. In my country there a teachers who graduated with a diploma from teachers' training colleges and those who graduated from university with a bachelor's degree. The latter's pay is higher than the former. There has been a debate on teachers' salary since we think it is too low. Some members of the public do not respect our job mostly because we don't earn that much. I quote a student back in the late 90's.."I don't want to be a teacher because teachers have to do such a tedious job and yet get very little pay" I forgave her.She was only 13.

A. well in my state, Arkansas you have to have at least a 4 yr. bachelor's degree and pass tests to be certified (or some equivalent) and Arkansas has a pretty low cost of living and wages are rather low here, I think a first year teacher would make in the range of $32,000 to $35,000 per year.

Is it the teachers' union fault that kids fail to perform well in inner city schools?
Q. Bonus Queston: Would you ever send your kid to a school that has high quality teachers but a lackluster student body? This student body that I am talking about is influenced by the gangsta culture. The teachers in this school are qualified in many respects and work hard but sometimes they have to dumb it down by ten notches.
Asked by La Raza Cosmica - Mon Jan 17 17:06:31 2011 - Politics - 15 Answers - Comments
A. Teachers are desperate to find someone to blame their failures on, aren't they. The fact remains that unions workers put out an inferior service or product compared to non-union workers.

What do high school teachers think of students that start crying?
Q. If it is for a legitimate reason, do they think it is ok or that the student is weak or overly emotional? Do they empathise with the student more than they may let on? This is just a question from a particularly stressful experience, in which crying occured in front of multiple teachers. Do they always remember that that was the crying kid or eventually they don't even think about it? It would be great if teachers could answer this.

A. Everybody cries at some point, even teachers...its because we all have emotions. I think it would depend what the situation was. If you were under stress about something and the teachers knew about it then i'm sure they would have understanding and not think any less of you. If you were becoming upset over nothing they would maybe think you were a bit of a cry baby but they are professionals and should move on. After all, high school kids are exactly that...high school kids- who are learning to deal with emotions. Teachers should be there to help you. Hope all is ok. All the things that we do in our life make up the type of person we are - that goes for teachers, politicians, doctors, anyone.

How many hours do teachers really work each day on average?
Q. I have been thinking about going to school to become a teacher. I was wondering how many hours do teachers, more specifically middle school and high school teachers actually spend each day working after grading papers and researching and things like that.
Asked by Lucas L - Sat Nov 6 14:12:38 2010 - Teaching - 1 Answers - Comments
A. Well, it depends on your job (like the head of department will obviously work longer hours) and your dedication. I know some teachers who are at school at 8 and don't leave until 5 in the afternoon. But then there are some who just work the standard 9 - 3 day. Most teachers do end up taking work home to mark, but they don't usually have to spend all night on it.

How do aspiring teachers get help paying for college?
Q. I want to be an art teacher of some sort. (theater, creative writing, general arts, photography) I'm a senior in high school, and I've heard that teachers are highly in demand in some places and that if you say you'll teach in that area for a certain amount of time or whatever, they'll help pay for your schooling. Could anyone give me some extra insight on this? Thanks.
Asked by XD - Tue Oct 7 19:28:35 2008 - Financial Aid - 1 Answers - Comments
A. You can try for scholarships, as they are out there for aspiring teachers. Other than that, once you graduate if you have student loans (chances are - you will), in certain states you can get student loan forgiveness for those loans and have them erased. Depending on where you are willing to live, some communities are offering payment for student loans as part of their recruitment packages also. Here is a great site that gives you information on student loan forgiveness from the federal government for teachers (and military members and doctors willing to serve for a certain amount of time in poor communities) Good luck!

A. I am so sorry that you are having a bad day. It may seem that your teachers are doing this on purpose but they've got deadlines to meet with your marks as well and then administration is putting their deadlines as well. It is alot and I know that what I am saying probably is not making sense but they need time to mark your assignments. All that I can say is to not leave your assignments for last minute then you will have too much to work on. The early bird catches the worm.

A. The way you worded that question makes me think you're not from the US, but here are the requirements for American educators: - 4 years of college - Bachelors Degree in Education (preferred) - Internship (preferred) - Certification by the state that you live in ((Teachers roughly start out making between $30,000 and $50,000 depending on what state you live in)) For promotion: - Normally 5 years of experience - Masters Degree or higher in specified field ((Principals usually make over $100,000 but I think that reflects on the city, county, or state you work for))

What are the policies regarding teachers and body art in public schools?
Q. I am considering getting a tattoo, but am also interested in becoming a teacher someday. Are there any rules and regulations as to whether or not public school teachers can have visible tattoos in the classroom?
Asked by Milo - Sun Dec 28 12:53:33 2008 - Teaching - 9 Answers - Comments
A. I am a primary school teacher and have tattoos, 1 of which is visible (inside of my bicep.) When I started my new teaching post I informed my employer of this who did not see it as a problem. There is the obvious stereotyping associated with tattoos (see other comments) and some institutions may not view them as acceptable. All schools have a code of conduct which includes a dress code and therefore reserve the right to ask you to cover it. At the end of the day it's your choice and remember you are only teaching 5 days a week!

A. Well every school has their set fund limits. I'm sure the school lacks the money to put out a paper each day or week to every student. Maybe instead, you could make a website. Limit the paper and printing process altogether. Join student council and voice your opinion. Or take it up with the principal. Maybe get a few signatures before hand to show that people will be interested in this! Good luck.

I would simply approach them before/after class and ask "Would you be comfortable writing a letter of recommendation for me? I am applying for ..." Are teachers allowed to quit during the school year?
Q. I am a currently employed as a teacher in a public school district. I can never remember teachers leaving in the middle of the year. Are we allowed to do so (I imagine we would have to be). If so, does anyone know the proper steps to take? Do I give two weeks notice, as in other jobs? Is there someone I should contact to ask the specifics? If anyone is a teacher who has quit or thought about quitting during a school year, please advise.
Asked by phalangie07 - Mon Jan 8 14:00:46 2007 - Teaching - 7 Answers - Comments
A. It depends. Did you sign a teaching contract? If so, you may not be able to get out of it. If you're just employed at-will (no contract), then you can quit. The private schools here are at-will employment, while the public schools are contract. So, private school teachers can quit whenever, while public school teachers are stuck for the duration of the school year. You'll have to contact your school board of directors for details. Best of luck!

How does performance based pay for teachers work?
Q. Let's say you have 2 teachers in the same high school: Teacher A teaches Gifted and Talented English, has 60 students a day and Teacher B teaches general English and has 150 students a day. Now will teacher A get more pay if her students score better than teacher B's students on state testing?

A. I think that it is based on the progress of students. But I personally don't think this would be fair to the Gifted teacher. How much more are they going to be able to learn? A lower student has more to grow.

A. I think that it is based on the progress of students. But I personally don't think this would be fair to the Gifted teacher. How much more are they going to be able to learn? A lower student has more to grow.

How many hours do teachers really work a day?
Q. I have been thinking about going to school to become a teacher. I was wondering how many hours do teachers, more specifically middle school and high school teachers actually spend each day working after grading papers and researching and things like that.

A. all day, everyday. The only time when we get to relax is half term holidays or if we are off school sick. We mark papers till late at night and work throughout the day.

Q. My twins are in preschool and they have 2 teachers and 2 teacher helpers what would be a great gift to give them? They are wonderful teachers so i want to give them something thoughtful but not too expensive. I don't mind doing crafts either so if you know of a craft me and my twins can make that would work too. Or i like to bake. Please help! Thanks.

A. How about some homemade cookies and a few herbal teabags in a variety of flavors? Or, a fresh fruit plate. Or, a free car wash token, or Sub Way, Starbucks, ice cream parlor, or grocery store, etc. gift certificate, or lottery ticket. Or, a house plant that you may have started yourself and have the twins help you put into a nice plant. Or a bouquet of flowers from your home garden and a card from the twins that they've made.

What type of secondary teachers work the most hours?
Q. On the secondary level, I think that English teachers work the most hours (due to all of the essays and papers that they have to grade) versus any other type of public secondary school teacher. Who agrees? What type of teacher works the least amount of hours? Why don't they pay English teachers more than say, a P.E. teacher? I am talking about hours outside of contract hours that are NOT paid. I am not talking about teachers who take up extracurricular activities like coaching or clubs because most of those activities provide the teacher a stipend.

A. I'm a high school math teacher and I know that I get to school earlier than most of the other teachers in the building and I stay later than all of them as well. I also usually take home papers to grade. I don't think the question is what subject does the teacher teach, I think it's more about the teacher. The teachers who work with me that work the hardest are of all subjects and grade levels. It depends on the teacher's commitment to their job and to the students, not the subject. Some districts actually do pay with a weighted scale according to subject. Many districts have a shortage of teachers in a certain subject and will offer to pay teachers that can teach those subjects more money. It really just depends on the district.
